my, how my Saturday nights have changed...

Over the weekend I had the privilege of attending a Kirtan with the very talented, Saul David Raye at Big Bend Yoga Center in Webster Groves. Let me just say, it was magical. I'm sure there are quite a few of you who are thinking, "what in the world is Kirtan?" Up until about a year ago I shared that sentiment. So, let me explain...

Kirtan is a type of music that stems from a style of yoga called, Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion). Kirtan started in India and eventually made it's way West during the 20th century. Basically, it is a series of call and response chants or mantras that are sung in Sanskrit and performed to beautiful music. There is usually a Kirtan "band" or set of leaders that guide the audience throughout the concert. It is a very powerful way to meditate, connect within and immerse yourself in community. It is spiritual, heartfelt, effortless and joyful.

As I am writing this post I am of course reminded of my first Kirtan which happened to be in my 200 hour yoga teacher training. I am going to be completely honest and tell you that I was a little taken back and out of my element during this experience. The music was wonderful but the environment was like nothing I had experienced before. There was strange dancing and singing in a foreign language that I simply did not connect to or understand. People were so moved that it was almost like they were having an out of body experience. At one point I remember looking around and not knowing how to feel or react. As I left that night I recall telling my boyfriend, Scott, that it "just wasn't for me."

It is interesting to see that now Kirtan is something that I look forward to and would choose over a weekend night on the town in a second. This past Saturday I was so lucky to be able to share this Kirtan with dear friends and this fabulous community. Thank you so much to Saul David Raye and Brad Smith & Friends for such an amazing night. It was divine. I was filled with joy, peace and love and was able to connect and surrender. Namaste to you.

Shanti.

Keri
